DF Sarajevo: Scandalous behaviour of the Sarajevo Canton towards children with developmental disabilities

(Patria) - The explanation sent by the Ombudsman's Office of the Sarajevo Canton to the Municipal Court, within the ongoing dispute before this court regarding the enrolment of two children with developmental disabilities in a public or private kindergarten, is scandalous, and the cantonal authorities must react as soon as possible, primarily to protect the children from further discrimination, and then to sanction those responsible - states the reaction of DF Sarajevo.

"It is completely unbelievable that the Ombudsman's Office of the Sarajevo Canton, defending the Ministry of Education, demanded a guarantee in the amount of 5,000 KM from the mother of two children with developmental disabilities, and then justified this by the 'potential negative reputation and perception to which the Ministry would be exposed' as well as the 'potential influx of additional requests from other private preschool institutions and/or parents of children with developmental disabilities'.

Such situations, in which the state acts most harshly, and without any sensitivity, towards the weakest in our society, while not enforcing laws on those for whom they were written, clearly show that the Ombudsman's Office is not up to the public function they have agreed to perform.

Instead of the Sarajevo Canton ensuring enrolment in kindergartens for all children with developmental disabilities, the Ombudsman's Office treats them as a social plague. A government is known by how it treats those who need help the most, and this government clearly does not care about such people.
