Right-winger Ivan Duque is the new president of Colombia

BOGOTA, (Patria) - Right-wing candidate Ivan Duque has been elected the new president of Colombia, making it highly likely that the peace agreement with the Marxist guerrilla group FARC will be changed.

With 97 percent of the votes counted, Duque has 54 percent support, while his opponent Gustavo Petro, a left-wing candidate and former guerrilla, has 42 percent, reports Hina agency.

Duque is a 41-year-old former official of the Washington-based InterAmerican Development Bank who promised to amend the agreement with FARC and abolish amnesty for many members of that group. He also announced corporate tax cuts and support for oil and mining projects.

These are the first elections since 2016 when the agreement was signed with the FARC guerrilla group, founded in 1964. This ended five decades of conflict in which more than 200,000 people lost their lives, while seven million fled their homes.

Juan Manuel Santos, the previous president of Colombia who served two terms and was the architect of that agreement, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year.
