Ten years since the death of Susan Sontag, a great friend of Sarajevo

Ten years ago in New York, Susan Sontag, an American writer, essayist and publicist, died. The battle with leukemia proved fatal for the 71-year-old Susan, writes BH news agency Patria.

Sontag was also a great friend of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is known for her engagement in human rights as well as her criticism of social circumstances and the government of the United States of America. She was called a leading intellectual of the 20th century.

During the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, she stayed in Sarajevo, first in April, and already in mid-July 1993 she directed the play „Waiting for Godot“, with which she symbolically sent a message that Sarajevo was waiting for help.

She presented Sarajevo as a city of pluralism. Sontag came to Sarajevo about ten times. Through her activities and media appearances, she spoke about events in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was the first to say that genocide had been committed in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Since 2010, the square in front of the National Theatre has been officially renamed to Theatre Square – Susan Sontag.
