The increase in the number of representatives from European right-wing parties in the European Parliament is not an optimistic development regarding the further enlargement of the European Union, if previous stances of these parties are to be believed, stated Igor Davidović, BiH Ambassador to Brussels, for the BiH news agency Patria (NAP).
According to preliminary results of the EU elections, right-wing parties, including pro-fascist political organizations that express particular intolerance towards foreigners, have seen the biggest growth in the Union's institutions.
Unofficial estimates suggest that in France, right-wing parties gained 25% of the votes for the European Parliament, in Denmark 23%, in Great Britain 22 percent, and in Austria 20%. Significant votes were also received by the right in Hungary with 15%, followed by Finland and Greece with two and three percent less.
- Such a development is not optimistic, considering that these parties gained votes on the wave of opposition to the enlargement of the European Union. Representatives from these parties have generally been the fiercest critics in the European Parliament's work so far, the enlargement process, which naturally interests us from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region the most – says Davidović.
However, he refrained from further assessments, emphasizing that it is clear that the European People's Party, which remained the largest group, will have to form coalitions as before. The composition of the European Commission, the EU's de facto government, will also depend on this.
- Yes, a meeting of EU heads of state and government is expected, and a decision on who will be the candidate for the President of the EC. We will see how things unfold, and it is very important how everything will be resolved personally. We are also interested in who will be in the EP Committee for South-Eastern Europe – adds Davidović.
