Prenj and Čvrsnica Mountains Burning for Days, Aerial Assistance Awaited

Without aerial assistance or rain, the fire that has been ravaging a large area on the mountains of Prenj and Čvrsnica in northern Herzegovina for several days cannot be extinguished due to the inaccessible terrain, the Civil Protection of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton reported, as carried by the Patria news agency.

Brief rain that fell on Monday evening slightly improved the situation at the fire sites, but due to the inaccessible terrain, it will not be possible to stop the firestorm. The large-scale fire is consuming grass, low vegetation, and forest in its path.

At the request of the Jablanica Civil and Fire Protection Service, representatives of the Herzegovina-Neretva and Federal Civil Protection administrations visited this municipality. They inspected the fire sites and held a meeting with representatives from Jablanica. The interlocutors concluded that an urgent procedure should be initiated to approve aerial firefighting assistance in order to stop the firestorm as soon as possible.
