Today is World Down Syndrome Day, let's wear colorful socks

The Association "Life with Down Syndrome" FBiH is celebrating World Down Syndrome Day for the ninth year in a row. One of the ways of celebrating is participating in the global campaign of wearing colorful, mismatched socks, reports the BiH news agency Patria.

World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on March 21st, a date that carries the symbolism and uniqueness of Down syndrome, which is 3 chromosomes on the 21st pair of chromosomes. Wearing mismatched colorful socks is a fun and simple way to highlight diversity.

A public event promoting the rights of people with Down syndrome will be held today at Sarajevo City Center, starting at 12:00 PM, under the slogan “My Opportunities, My Choices”.

Through a series of fun and very educational workshops, children and young people will have the opportunity to express their abilities, their choices, and to recognize any obstacles they may face on their path, and how to overcome them. Children and young people with Down syndrome and their peers will host everyone who wishes to actively participate in the workshops. The workshop facilitators are Alena Džebo Hećo, Jovana Milosavljević, and Sanja Tanović, while Hatidža Nuhić will lead the activities.

Various activities will also be held in other cities.

Since 2012, this date has been included in the UN's important dates, and conferences are held at the UN in New York on this occasion.

Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, stated at the 2012 conference:

- On this day, we affirm that persons with Down syndrome have the right to fully and effectively enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms. Let each of us contribute to ensuring that children and persons with Down syndrome fully participate in the development and life of their communities on an equal footing with others. Let us build an inclusive society open to all.

On this day, a large number of public figures show their support by wearing colorful socks, and awareness among the population in BiH is also growing.
