Today is March 8 - International Women's Day

(Patria) - The idea for celebrating International Women's Day emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. It was a time of rapid industrialization and economic expansion, which often led to protests due to poor working conditions.

Women employed in the clothing and textile industry decided to hold public demonstrations in New York on March 8, 1857, but they were dispersed by the police. However, they did not give up and two months later founded a union.

In the following years, demonstrations continued on the same date, and one of them remained recorded in history as one of the most influential.

Namely, in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York demanding shorter working hours, better wages, and the right to vote.

Two years later, the first international women's conference was held in Copenhagen, organized by the Socialist International, where "International Women's Day" was established - at the suggestion of the famous German socialist Clara Zetkin.

It was not long before the celebration spread to other countries, and as early as 1911, International Women's Day was celebrated by more than a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

On the eve of World War I, in a campaign for peace, Russian women celebrated their first International Women's Day on February 23, the last Sunday in February.

After discussions, it was agreed that International Women's Day would be celebrated every year on March 8, and that date has remained the global date for International Women's Day ever since, writes IWD.

The United Nations first celebrated International Women's Day in 1975. Then, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming the UN Day for Women's Rights and International Peace, to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions.

International Women's Day is today a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for equality and equity.

To all ladies, mothers, wives, sisters, daughters... the editorial staff of the Patria News Agency congratulates March 8, International Women's Day.
