Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust Victims

SARAJEVO, (Patria)- The Association for Social Research and Communication (UDIK) reminds the public of January 27, the day marking the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by Soviet soldiers in 1945. Millions of people were persecuted, treated extremely inhumanely, stripped of their dignity, and finally killed by the Nazis and their collaborators across Europe between 1933 and 1945. The United Nations General Assembly adopted an official resolution on marking this day in 2005, and the resolution calls on all United Nations member states to honor the memory of the Holocaust victims. Furthermore, this resolution encourages the development of educational programs aimed at demonstrating the determination to help prevent genocide in the future.

UDIK Coordinator, Edvin Kanka Ćudić, believes that commemorating the Holocaust is the duty of every responsible citizen.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Ćudić emphasizes:

“The Holocaust represents the spectrum of hatred towards the Other and the Different. We have not learned much from such a brutal history, as something similar happened to us in the 90s of the 20th century. By forgetting or denying the victims of the Holocaust, we are actually forgetting about anti-fascism in our society.”

UDIK representatives will attend the commemoration on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust Victims, which will be held on Monday, January 27, in the hall of the Jewish Community in Sarajevo starting at 12:00 PM.
