Bosnia and Herzegovina Independence Day is celebrated on March 1st and is not carried over, Hota-Muminović declared March 2nd a non-working day?

(Patria) - The Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Policy issued a statement today clarifying that March 1st - Bosnia and Herzegovina Independence Day is celebrated on Sunday and is not carried over to Monday.

However, in the school calendar for 2025/2026, the Ministry of Education and Science designated March 2nd as a non-working day due to a public holiday.

In several cantonal institutions, employees were told they would not be working on Monday, March 2nd.

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Policy announced that in accordance with the Law on the Proclamation of March 1st as Bosnia and Herzegovina Independence Day, the Day of Independence is celebrated on March 1st, and that on the holiday, it is a non-working day for state bodies, enterprises, and other legal entities. Public holidays, according to this Law, are not carried over and are celebrated on the day they fall.

This year, Independence Day falls on a Sunday, and accordingly, we call on all legal entities that operate on Sundays, due to the nature of their work and working hours, to respect the rights of workers who work on this day, to increased wages, in accordance with Article 76 of the Labour Law.

An exception was, for example, in 2020 when the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at its session held on February 20, 2020, passed a Decision on declaring March 2, 2020, a non-working day in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Whether this will be done this year will be known by the end of this week.
