Do you recognize the people in these photos?

SARAJevo, (Patria) – World-renowned photojournalist Danilo Krstanović photographed people in besieged Sarajevo during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s. His photographs filled the covers of foreign magazines and pointed to the horrors that residents of various faiths in besieged Sarajevo were going through. 

A quarter of a century after the beginning of the siege of Sarajevo, young photojournalist Armin Durgut is photographing the same people in the same locations. 

“In this way, I want to preserve the memory of the late Danilo, but also to show the transformation that has occurred in these 25 years,” says Armin Durgut to the Patria agency, who now needs help identifying the people in the photographs of the late Danilo Krstanović. Durgut is publishing Krstanović’s photos from wartime Sarajevo on social media, so that as many people as possible who could help him identify some of the figures in those photos can see them.

The project is supported by the Center for Post-Conflict Research.

The photographs will be exhibited in Sarajevo in June of this year. 

Krstanović passed away from the consequences of a stroke in May 2012. He was 61 years old. He was born in Sarajevo, where he studied and lived. From 1978 to 1996, he was employed as a photographer at Sarajevo’s Oslobođenje, and after that, he worked for several domestic and foreign media outlets and for the British agency Reuters.

Armin Durgut (23) was born in Zenica, six months before the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina finally stopped. He worked for several domestic media outlets, and his photographs have been published by some of the most reputable world magazines. Last year, he received a scholarship from Ron Haviv and Gary Knight, who are among the most famous war photojournalists of today.
