Montenegrin changes sex, Health Fund provides 10,500 euros

The Montenegrin Health Insurance Fund has paid 10,500 euros to a Belgrade private clinic for the costs of surgery for the first Montenegrin citizen who will change sex, reports the Patria News Agency. 

Fund spokesperson Amer Ramusović said that the money for treatment, according to the clinic's proforma invoice, has already been paid.

"The Fund also covers travel costs for treatment, with accommodation costs likely included within the treatment costs. The treatment /sex change/ was approved based on the proposal of a panel of doctors from the Clinical Center and based on the findings of the Fund's first-instance medical commission," Ramusović told Montenegrin media.

He stated that the Fund's annual budget does not foresee costs for specific types of treatment, but rather insured persons are referred abroad according to the prescribed procedure if the treatment cannot be performed in Montenegro.
