Crnadak: Nuclear waste repository at Trgovska Gora endangers 30,000 residents

VIENNA, (Patria) - BiH Foreign Minister Igor Crnadak addressed the 63rd General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna today. The focus of Minister Crnadak's address was the problem of constructing a nuclear waste repository at Trgovska Gora, on the border with BiH.

He emphasized that BiH had already expressed concern in 2015 over the decision of neighboring Croatia to relocate nuclear waste from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant to the border with BiH.

"Nearby is the Una River Nature Park, as well as the Trgovska Gora site, which is only three kilometers away from Novi Grad, a municipality of 30,000 residents that strongly opposes Croatia's intention, as do nine neighboring municipalities that are also in danger," Minister Crnadak stressed.

The minister thanked the International Atomic Energy Agency for its long-standing support and expressed a desire for cooperation to continue and expand. He pointed out that BiH has benefited greatly from projects in various fields so far - from infrastructure to institutional ones - and expressed full readiness to continue successful cooperation with the Technical Cooperation Sector in order to improve capacities in the use of nuclear technology in the fields of medicine, industry, economy, and radiation protection.

Minister Crnadak concluded his address to the General Conference by once again warning all participants of the potential dangers if nuclear waste were to be deposited at Trgovska Gora.
