Čović sent a proposal: Election of the BiH Presidency member from the Croat people from the so-called third entity

(Patria) - HDZ President Dragan Čović, after today's session of the Croatian National Assembly (HNS), confirmed that he sent a proposal for amendments to the Election Law to the other coalition partners in state government, based on the agreement from the meeting they held.

This proposal was sent to the presidents of SDP, NiP, NS, and SNSD.

He pointed out that these proposed amendments relate to the Central Election Commission (CEC), the election of members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and technical election issues.

He then referred to the proposed amendments to the election of members of the BiH Presidency.

"This is about the proposal from Mostar from 10 days ago with colleagues from the Trojka, under the condition that the Constitution cannot be changed, and it is difficult for us to have an environment of two-thirds majorities - without changing the constitution to make changes that will reflect a relationship that we all, when we talk today, say is not good for one nation to elect a representative for another nation. Nothing changes for the election of the member from Republika Srpska, nor in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina when electing the Bosniak member of the Presidency, but we have added a conditional category. Whoever wins on the Croat list will have to additionally meet the condition that they won in at least three cantons defined there, and if not in three, then in two, and if not in two, then in one, or ultimately, whoever received the most votes. There is an additional condition to eliminate the possibility of the Croat member of the Presidency being elected with 99 percent of someone else's votes," Čović explained.

He stated that five cantons were defined as areas where Croats reside, and that this is a condition for the election of the BiH Presidency member from the Croat people. These are the Central Bosnia Canton, West Herzegovina Canton, Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, Posavina Canton, and Canton 10.

He announced that an attempt will be made to adopt this law by the end of February.

He announced that there will be seven legal solutions at the session of the House of Peoples of the BiH Parliament on January 31st.

Speaking about the Constitutional Court of BiH, he said that an agreement was reached to elect three judges in the BiH Parliament, but it was not defined whether they are foreigners or not.

When asked if the Trojka supports such an election of the BiH Presidency member, he said:

"They accepted our proposal as reasonable. It makes no sense for Bosniaks to elect the Croat member of the Presidency. I do not think the Constitution can be changed because then we would have to implement all the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights from Strasbourg," Čović said.
