Around 10,000 residents of Bosanska Otoka will be evacuated on Sunday, October 26, when the destruction of a World War II aerial bomb found in this town is planned, writes the Patria news agency.
Local authorities have already arranged accommodation for residents with relatives and in hotels in Bužim, Bosanska Krupa, and Bihać.
The discovered bomb dates from 1944 and weighs 248 kilograms. It has a very sensitive fuse that must not be suddenly moved or struck, so the neutralization and destruction operation has been carefully planned.
It is located at a depth of 90 centimeters and near inhabited buildings, so the population must be evacuated.
The bomb destruction operation will involve members of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Civil Protection of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
