Butila - Vlakovo Road Increases Traffic Functionality

The Sarajevo bypass is part of the future trans-European corridor Vc, located in the northwest of Sarajevo in the Bosna river valley, and construction works on it are divided into lots 1, 2 and 3. Euro-Asfalt d.o.o is one of the contractors on the mentioned lots, and the Sarajevo bypass is Lot 3.

The Butila - Vlakovo subsection, according to Said Džafić from Euro-Asfalt (Lot 3a), is designed as a motorway with two separate carriageways, each consisting of two traffic lanes, namely a driving lane and a passing lane for each direction of travel, and one hard shoulder for emergency stopping in each carriageway, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

- The subsection of the Sarajevo bypass, Butila-Vlakovo, which is 3.300 km long, was successfully completed on time, and its functionality is already being felt by traffic participants. Lot 3A continues from Lot 1 immediately before the Butila interchange and extends southwest to the Vlakovo interchange. It is important because people traveling towards Mostar or from Mostar towards Zenica do not have to enter Sarajevo. With it, we have connected the road from Zenica to Tarčin, and it was probably the investor's idea to connect that segment and relieve congestion in Rajlovac and the Stup interchange - said Džafić.

On this route, the Bojnik viaduct, which is located entirely on the alignment, and two underpasses, Osijek and Treševine, have been constructed.

- The section itself was challenging, because a good part of it was built in a floodplain, which required additional site preparation and creating conditions to continue with the construction of embankments and the pavement structure - said Džafić, explaining how materials are selected.

- All installed materials were previously tested and approved by the Supervisory Authority. During installation, control tests were carried out, so what is prescribed by standards and norms was satisfied. We had to meet the standards and norms prescribed for such types of structures - said Džafić. Aluminum noise protection panels were also installed.

- The project was carried out from August 2013 to June 2014, and fortunately there was more good than bad weather, except for April and May during the catastrophic floods. But, with a good approach and organization, we managed to finish the job. The coordination was well set up, and then it went well - explained Džafić.
