Čanak: Serbian Orthodox Church justifies attacks on Montenegro more than in the nineties

SARAJevo, (Patria) - Public figures from the region warned in a recent Appeal that the mechanisms for destabilizing Montenegro are identical to those conceived in the nineties of the last century and that their goal is the same: to keep Montenegro under the Greater Serbian patronage from Belgrade, which, as they stated, is the surest way to preserve the idea of a Greater Serbia.

CdM asked the leader of the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, Nenad Čanak, for his opinion on these developments and whether the situation smells like the nineties to him.

He says that he would not equate the nineties with the current situation in 2020 for the simple reason that the historical contexts are not even similar, but what certainly connects them is the abuse of national feelings of a part of Serbs outside Serbia in order to implement the expansionist policy of Greater Serbian origin.

“The differences are significant because, for example, in the nineties, the national-socialist regime in Belgrade did not aim to break up the SFR Yugoslavia, but to take over the SFRJ or its largest part and constitute it into a Greater Serbian centralized entity. Today, it is about manipulating the remnants of Greater Serbian policy in the interest of creating an unsinkable aircraft carrier in the Balkans for the needs of the current Russian regime,” Čanak assesses for CdM.

He notes that, thirty years later, Montenegro is a NATO member, which largely deters direct engagement of various paramilitary “parapatriotic” organizations. On the other hand, he adds, the role of the Serbian Orthodox Church in justifying attacks on Montenegro is much greater than in the nineties. So, when everything is considered, the circumstances are different, but the fuel is not.
