Bundestag declares Bosnia and Herzegovina a safe country, asylum conditions impossible!

Germany has declared Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Serbia as safe countries of origin, effectively preventing citizens of these countries from obtaining asylum in Germany, reports the BH news agency Patria (NAP).

The German parliament debated last week the bill proposed by Chancellor Angela Merkel, which declares these countries sufficiently safe and stable for asylum applications from their citizens to be processed under a simplified procedure. As we have learned, the law was adopted in the Bundestag and had the support of both key German political parties.

According to data cited in the adopted law, the number of asylum applications from these countries increased after the visa regime was abolished. Germany incurs costs of up to 700 euros per month for each asylum seeker, according to local media.

From January to March 2014 alone, there were 6,682 asylum applications from citizens of these three countries, which is 20 percent of the total number of new asylum seekers in Germany – the law's explanatory memorandum states.

In explaining the reasons for adopting such a law, the Bundestag extensively describes the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and points out that the majority of asylum seekers are from the Roma population.

Certain human rights violations, the right to a fair trial, and economic and social problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina have been noted, but overall, Germany assesses that there are sufficient reasons to declare Bosnia and Herzegovina a safe country.

- The security situation is stable, and there is no immediate danger of violence. Citizens' applications are of an economic and social nature, and in relation to the fight against corruption – the document states, NAP reports.
