Bulgarians want Bokova at the head of the UN, Lajčak, Jeremić and Türk among candidates

The Bulgarian government has nominated Irina Bokova, the current head of UNESCO, for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, and among the possible candidates is the former High Representative in BiH Miroslav Lajčak, reports the BiH news agency Patria (NAP). The mandate of the current UN chief Ban Ki-moon expires in 2016, and it is expected that the next Secretary-General will come from Eastern Europe. However, lobbying for the position has already begun, and the decision will be made by the UN General Assembly, upon the proposal of the Security Council. 

Bokova's candidacy is the first official candidacy confirmed by a government, but the names of Lajčak, as well as the former Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić, the former Slovenian President Danilo Türk, and some other officials from this region, have been mentioned for a long time. Bokova could be the first woman in that position, and she is remembered for allowing Palestine to become a full member of UNESCO, despite numerous criticisms, reports NAP.
