Number of Employees Not Keeping Pace with Growing Number of Pensioners in FBiH: 1,155 New Pensioners in October

(Patria) - As of October 31, 2024, the number of employees residing in FBiH is 551,291. Compared to September, the number of employees increased by 490.

However, during the same period, the number of pensioners also increased by as many as 1,155, according to PIO/MIO data. Thus, 452,201 beneficiaries received their September pension, while 453,356 pensioners received their October pension. 296.5 million KM were needed for pension payments.

The difference between the number of employees and the number of pensioners in FBiH is only 97,935 in favor of employees. However, this trend of monthly growth in the number of pensioners, not matched by the number of newly employed, is worrying.

In the next five years, the number of pensioners will significantly increase, considering the age structure of employees. If we add to this the fact that the working-age and reproductive population continues to leave Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina will very quickly face increasingly severe consequences of demographic trends, and the pension system as we currently have it will collapse because it is unsustainable.

It is already known that the Government of FBiH has provided hundreds of millions to the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund to ensure regular pension payments.

The pensioner population has presented the Government of FBiH with a demand for pension increases, and they are also requesting a one-time payment due to the rising cost of living.

However, for now, there is no information from the Government of FBiH regarding the budget rebalance, making it uncertain to predict whether pensioners will receive the promised aid at all.
