British High Court dismisses charges against Tony Blair for Iraq aggression

The High Court of Great Britain has blocked an attempt by the former Chief of Staff of the Iraqi army to file a lawsuit against former British Prime Minister Tony Blair for war crimes in Iraq, British media report, as reported by Patria agency.

Iraqi General Abdul Wahed Shanan al-Rabat accused Blair, as Prime Minister of Great Britain, of committing aggression during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The High Court dismissed the charges, stating that under British law, there are no grounds for indictment.

The Iraqi general attempted to file the indictment based on the "Iraq Inquiry" report, written in 12 volumes, which stated that then-Iraqi President Saddam Hussein posed no threat to world security and that there was no reason for military intervention.

The invasion of Iraq began on March 20, 2003, and ended on May 1. It involved joint forces of the USA, Great Britain, Australia, and Poland against the government of Saddam Hussein. 

One of the main reasons for the invasion, according to then-US President George Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, was that Saddam Hussein possessed "weapons of mass destruction," which turned out to be untrue. 

Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death and executed on December 30, 2006.
