British parliamentarians demand Assange's extradition to Sweden

SARAJEVO (Patria) - More than 70 British MPs have signed a petition urging the Ministry of the Interior to extradite Julian Assange to Sweden, if that country requests it, and not the United States of America.
The MPs emphasize that such a gesture would send "a strong message that Britain's priority is the fight against sexual violence and that London is serious about such accusations".
"We, of course, do not presume guilt, but we believe that a court process is necessary and that the injured party in Sweden should receive justice," they stated in the letter.
The MPs also point out that several rape charges against Assange have been dropped due to the statute of limitations and that the only remaining case expires in August 2020.
Julian Assange, the founder of "WikiLeaks", was arrested on April 11 at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he had been hiding for the past seven years.
He was found guilty by a British court of breaching bail conditions in 2012, and the court will deliver its sentence at a second hearing on May 2.
The US has requested the extradition of Assange, whom Washington has accused of conspiracy to access a confidential US government computer along with former US military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning in 2010.
Let us remind you, Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden.
During Assange's stay in Sweden in October 2010, Swedish police began investigating his involvement in a rape case.
When British authorities approved Assange's extradition to Sweden, he found refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in June 2012, where he was granted diplomatic asylum.
Assange claims that the Swedish government is seeking him because it wants to extradite him to the United States, where he would be tried for treason in connection with the publication of confidential information on WikiLeaks.
He is a programmer, journalist, and activist, the editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks, an organization that publishes secret information and confidential documents from anonymous "whistleblower" sources.
