British magazine The Economist: The Balkans - Europe's backyard

(Patria) - Balkan leaders will join Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron in Berlin today.

British magazine The Economist writes that the German Chancellor hopes to re-impose some kind of order in the context of regional disputes.

The magazine recalls that America and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini smiled while following talks between the presidents of Serbia and Kosovo on the exchange of territories according to ethnic dominance, adding that "Ms Merkel considers this dangerous - and not without reason."

"Serbian leaders hope that the trade of territory and population will ultimately lead to unification with the Serbian entity in Bosnia, which others fear could lead to war. Serbia is trying to strengthen its position by arming itself and talking about war with Kosovo, which established its army in December. At the same time, North Macedonia, which recently resolved the dispute with Greece regarding its name, now hopes to open negotiations for EU accession. Kosovo wants visa-free travel for its citizens in the Schengen zone. Faced with all of the above, EU leaders must be united and decisive - otherwise, they will be divided and unfocused," writes The Economist, reports the Patria agency.
