Brexit and Coronavirus: Transition Period Without Extensions!

(Patria) – The British Prime Minister categorically claims that the transition period after Brexit will end by December 31, despite interrupted negotiations with the EU due to the crisis caused by the coronavirus.

This was also reiterated by his spokesperson, commenting on the postponement of negotiations that were supposed to take place next week in London, while officials consider the possibility of a video conference.

When asked if the transition period could be extended due to the emergency situation, Johnson's spokesperson briefly replied 'no', adding that 'under British law, a request for an extension is not possible'.

This only confirmed the firm stance of the British government from December, when the withdrawal agreement from the EU was adopted – that the transition period cannot be extended under any circumstances.

Otherwise, during the transition period, Great Britain must continue to adhere to EU rules and regulations, which includes paying contributions to the EU budget. The end of the transition period will mark the end of such an arrangement, and it will be replaced by an agreement on future relations, trade, and security, among other things.

Prime Minister Johnson's spokesperson confirmed that the British government is aware of the time it has for negotiations with the EU on a trade agreement, and that they will be held in some alternative way, such as a video conference.

Before the resumption of negotiations involving more than 100 officials, the UK government is expected to forward the draft agreement to the EU negotiators.

Despite the coronavirus, the British Parliament remains open, and local elections will be held in May, although the Electoral Commission is requesting a postponement due to the health crisis that is putting local authorities under additional pressure.
