Brammertz with Schmidt: 400 war crimes suspects in BiH are in Serbia and Croatia

(Patria) - High Representative Christian Schmidt spoke today with Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Courts Serge Brammertz.

The urgent need was highlighted for resolving the remaining war crimes cases in Bosnia and Herzegovina that are stalled, as around 400 suspects are still not available to law enforcement agencies, and most of them reside in Serbia and Croatia.

These individuals must face charges in the countries where they reside. The High Representative called for greater cooperation, will, and responsibility throughout the region to finally conclude these cases.

He also called for an end to the denial of genocide and war crimes, and the glorification of war criminals, to enable new generations to grow up without the burden of the past.

All communities in the Western Balkans have made promises to each other, as well as to the international community, to work together on overcoming the horrors of the past, accepting the truth about war crimes and bringing perpetrators to justice, and building a better future within the European family.

The High Representative welcomed the outstanding contribution of Chief Prosecutor Brammertz in restoring faith in the existence of justice for victims.
