Christmas fairytale from Posušje: Kind people built a house for a young man with special needs

The Galić family from Posušje, who have a son with special needs, received a new home this Christmas. The four-member family of Danko Galić moved this Christmas from a small, inadequate house in Marića Dolac to Posušje, into a house that is fully adapted to the needs of their 21-year-old son Andrija, who is a 100% disabled person with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. The house, built with the help of many people, has enough space for the whole family and all the needs that come with daily life caring for a person with special needs.

The idea of building a house for the Galićs was initiated many years ago by the local community of Vinjani, and in the last two years, in cooperation with the local community of Čitluk, and the then mayor Branko Bago, the idea began to be realized. Donations poured in from all sides. The house was built with donations from many good people, both from Posušje and beyond.

"If we wanted to name everyone who helped, we would surely make a mistake and miss someone. As for the funds collected, we were truly surprised that so many people so readily agreed to participate in the construction of the house. Our entire family is heartily grateful for every form of help and support," father Danko Galić told us. The president of MZ Čitluk, Branko Biško Panko, as well as Ivana Bešlić, Danko's niece, who actively worked and coordinated the collection of donations, joined in expressing their gratitude.

The Government of West Herzegovina Canton, the municipality of Posušje with the then mayor Branko Bago, the parish priest and priests of the Posušje parish, businessmen and companies from the municipality of Posušje, many people from the diaspora, family and relatives, and the construction contractors who did not charge for their work on the house are those who helped. It is interesting to mention that the son of Danko's brother, Zdenko Galić, provided the land for the construction of the house, and the fact that the construction of the house was supported by associations of bullfighters of all nationalities shows that humanity knows no bounds.

The action to build the house began on September 15, 2020. Thanks exclusively to the kindness and humanity of many people, with surprising speed, both for the construction organizers and for the Galić family, they moved into the house just over a year after construction began. And just in time for Christmas – as the best possible gift, not only in terms of a new house but also in terms of the support of all the people who participated in the construction, and the feeling that there are good people when you need them.
