Bosnia could not remain in something that no longer existed

Recalling the referendums of February and March 1992, Bosnian writer Abdulah Sidran told the BH News Agency Patria (NAP) in an exclusive interview that the referendum was a recommendation from the international community, as a response to the political situation unfolding in the then-Yugoslavia.

- They told us, whatever you decide on the ballot, so it shall be. In that sense, all the steps we took then were forced - Sidran told NAP.

Speaking about the circumstances under which the referendum was discussed and realized, Sidran said that the restoration of Bosnia and Herzegovina's independence was a logical sequence of events, because Bosnia and Herzegovina could not remain in what was left of the former Yugoslavia. Such a Yugoslavia no longer had the "Y" of Yugoslavia for him, so BiH had to go its own way.

- BiH did not leave Yugoslavia. Because how can you leave something that doesn't exist? - says Sidran, explaining it by saying that water has its chemical formula, so if you remove any element from it, it is no longer water.

- Thus, Yugoslavia had its political formula, which was destroyed, and we could no longer remain in it - says Sidran.  

The phone call with Sidran was interrupted by the 12 o'clock news, which the writer did not want to miss. He also added that the term independence is just a fiction for him today.

- Even America is dependent on China, due to loans - says Sidran.

For Sidran, Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially the period following the referendum, is a mystery with enough material for study for at least the next 50 years.
