Bosnia and Herzegovina ranks last in Europe for tertiary education attainment

(Patria) - According to the Eurostat report for 2023, Bosnia and Herzegovina ranks last in Europe for tertiary education attainment, with only 15 percent of the adult population possessing higher education qualifications. View the report HERE

At the top of the list of the most educated European countries are Ireland with 47 percent and Sweden with 46 percent. Among neighboring countries, Slovenia has 30 percent with higher education, Croatia 25 percent, and Serbia 23.3 percent.

Differences in educational systems and the duration of compulsory education also play an important role in these statistics. Most European countries require compulsory education lasting between 10 and 12 years, but there are exceptions. For example, France has the longest compulsory education, lasting 15 years. Children in France start school at just three years old and finish at 18.

For all countries, the statistics include the population aged 15 to 64.
