A Bohemian Whom Josip Broz Tito Enjoyed Spending Time With: 25 Years Since the Death of Zuko Džumhur

Zulfikar Zuko Džumhur is one of the most famous Bosnian-Herzegovinian travel writers, painters and caricaturists, and the anniversary of his death falls on Thursday, 27 November, writes the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP).

Born in Konjic in 1920, into a respected ulema family, he became one of the most famous bohemians of his time, with whom even Josip Broz Tito enjoyed socialising.

Initially, he studied law, but soon transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts, which he graduated from in the class of Petar Dobrović.

Džumhur published his first drawings in Narodna Armija in 1947, and from then on collaborated as a caricaturist and illustrator for Jež, Borba, Vetrenjača, Politika, Oslobođenje, the magazine Danas, and NIN as a permanent contributor and editor. He published more than 10,000 caricatures.

He wrote scripts for several short films and three feature films. He created 35 stage designs for theatre, and in the last ten years worked at Sarajevo Television as a scriptwriter and host of the series Hodoljublje. Together with Momo Kapor, he is the author of the book „Zelena Čoja Montenegra“.

He died in Herceg Novi, and was buried in his native Konjic on 29 November 1989, writes NAP.
