Former German MP downloaded child pornography

Former Social Democratic SPD member of the Bundestag Sebastian Edathy admitted on Monday that he downloaded child pornography from the internet and agreed to a fine of 5,000 euros to end the court proceedings against him, reports the Patria news agency.

"I realised that I made a mistake. It took me a long time," Edathy said in a statement read out in court by his lawyer.

The 45-year-old Edathy agreed to pay the fine in favour of a foundation for the protection of children in Lower Saxony, because he downloaded pornographic material onto a laptop owned by the Bundestag. The prosecution claims that in 2013 he downloaded video films and photographs of child pornography from the internet.

Edathy, who was once considered a young rising star of the SPD, resigned his parliamentary mandate after investigators announced that his name was on the client list of a Canadian company allegedly distributing child pornography.
