Former Bin Laden bodyguard released from Guantanamo: New life with family begins in Montenegro

Former bodyguard of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, Abdel Malik Abdel Wahab al-Rahabi, has been transferred to Montenegro, as part of a humanitarian program launched by the United States government with the aim of closing the prison in Guantanamo, Cuba, reports the Patria News Agency.

As reported by Podgorica media, citing a statement from the Pentagon, the US authorities approved the transfer of al-Rahabi to Montenegro because, among other things, he "changed his mindset during the 14 years spent in prison in Cuba".

The Yemeni al-Rahabi, according to information from the US Department of Defense, was a member of Al Qaeda and "was supposed to possibly participate in a planned kidnapping".

Al-Rahabi is the second detainee transferred from Guantanamo to Montenegro, and he told US authorities that he wants to "forget the past and start building a peaceful future with his wife and daughter".

No charges were ever filed against him, and his release from prison was approved back in 2014 when it was assessed that he did not pose a threat to US security.
