Bildt: I was asked if there would be war in BiH, I said no

Carl Bildt, Swedish politician and diplomat and former High Representative in BiH, described the situation in BiH after his visit to Sarajevo on his blog, reports the Patria News Agency.

In his blog, Bildt wrote, among other things, about the current political situation and his impressions after talking with the people of Sarajevo.

-I met many worried people due to the rise of tensions and instability in the region, especially in the country. Many people I spoke with were extremely concerned, and it is natural that they wanted to discuss this with me, Bildt states in his blog.

In Sarajevo, he met with five political representatives of the permanent members of the UN Security Council. As he stated, they discussed the current political situation, and his successor Valentin Inzko had a very busy day yesterday.

-The pre-election campaign always heats up the atmosphere. It is common for almost everyone to play the nationalism card.

Local elections in BiH, parliamentary elections in Croatia. Distrust escalates through rhetoric. Statements cross borders. People are worried. The path to overcoming regional conflicts would certainly be the integration of all networks and structures into the European Union. That is the only way to succeed, Bildt states.

Furthermore, he says that the country's integration has been called into question due to the overall situation.

-Where this can lead, we do not know. After receiving questions from concerned citizens in recent days about whether there would be war again like in the '90s, I categorically said that it is not possible, but I was concerned about why they were even asking me that, and not just once, writes the former High Representative in BiH.

He adds that there are positive developments when it comes to our country.

-In BiH, they united around the coordination mechanism, which had created various controversies for years. The application for EU membership is on the table of ministers in Brussels. Sooner or later, it will have to be forwarded to the Commission for evaluation, but the path is long. The lack of enthusiasm from Brussels logically leads to a lack of enthusiasm within BiH itself, writes Bildt.
