(Patria) - The United States is working with other countries to end the conflict in Sudan, the White House announced, following reports of mass killings during the fall of the city to paramilitary forces last week, Reuters reported.
The capture of al-Fashir by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in Darfur, marked a turning point in the civil war in the African country, giving the paramilitary group de facto control over more than a quarter of the territory.
"The United States has been actively engaged in efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the terrible conflict in Sudan," said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
International Criminal Court prosecutors said on Monday they were gathering evidence of alleged mass killings and rapes in al-Fashir.
Hundreds of civilians and unarmed fighters may have been killed during the fall of the city, the United Nations Human Rights Office said on Friday.
Witnesses described RSF fighters separating men from women and children, after which gunshots were heard. The RSF denies harming civilians.
