BiH with 119 representatives at the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona

TARRAGONA, (Patria) - The 18th Mediterranean Games, the largest regional sports competition in Europe, begin today in the Spanish city of Tarragona. Bosnia and Herzegovina will be represented at the Games by a record 119 members, including 70 athletes, who will compete in 14 sports, BHRT reports.

This major regional competition will bring together 26 countries connected by the Mediterranean Sea, with approximately 4,000 athletes, 1,000 judges and representatives of international sports federations, and more than 1,000 journalists.

The Bosnian flag at tonight's opening ceremony will be carried by karateka Ivona Čavar, who currently has the best sporting result among the participants in the parade, namely third place at the World Senior Championships in Linz, Austria.

BiH will compete in two team sports with the U-18 football team and the women's volleyball team.

In accordance with the organisers' regulations, for the first time in history, BiH will also be represented at the Mediterranean Games by an athlete with a disability. This is para-swimmer Nermin Memić, and his coach will be Amel Kapo.

The President of the Olympic Committee of BiH, Siniša Kisić, said that the Mediterranean Games are a major sports competition in which 26 countries will participate, most of which are European states.

- At the Mediterranean Games, BiH athletes have so far had a lot of success and won many medals. From all the Games since 1993, since gaining independence, our athletes have returned with medals. We expect that 119 athletes, coaches, judges, and staff will give their best to continue that continuity of winning medals. The Games programme includes 31 sports, and our athletes participate in 14 sports - said Kisić.
