(Patria) - US President Joe Biden signed an executive order introducing additional measures against individuals and groups involved in destabilizing activities in the Western Balkan countries.
The order aims to combat corruption, strengthen democracy and stability, and preserve the territorial integrity of the countries in the region.
"Due to continuous attempts by individuals to threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Western Balkan countries, as well as to undermine post-war agreements and institutions, we are introducing additional measures within the framework of the state of emergency declared in 2001," reads President Biden's order.
According to the new order, the assets and interests of all persons acting against the stability of the Western Balkans or involved in corruption, either directly or indirectly, will be blocked. This includes:
- individuals responsible for destabilizing activities or threats to the territorial integrity of the region;
- those undermining democratic processes and institutions;
- persons connected with serious human rights violations or corruption in the region;
- leaders or members of entities involved in the aforementioned activities.
The asset freeze also extends to those who provide support to sanctioned individuals or entities, as well as to their spouses and adult children.
The measures were introduced to ensure the implementation of key international agreements, including the Dayton Agreement, the Ohrid Framework Agreement, and the Prespa Agreement.
Particular focus is placed on combating corruption, which, according to the US administration, undermines the rule of law and trust in democratic processes.
The executive order is part of a broader strategy by the US administration to preserve peace and security in the Western Balkans.
Let us recall that this is not the first time the US has introduced measures to stabilize the region – a state of emergency was declared back in 2001, and it was further expanded in 2021.
This move shows that Washington continues to monitor developments in the region and provide support for democratic processes, while simultaneously fighting all forms of destabilization.
