BiH trade unionists launch fight against new labour law

The Union of Independent Trade Unions of Bosnia and Herzegovina announces that from tomorrow it will begin the fight for workers' rights, i.e. the fight against the new labour law, which is to be adopted in BiH at the insistence of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, reports the BiH news agency  Patria.

The start of the campaign “NO to the new Labour Law that reduces workers' rights!” begins on Thursday with a press conference for the media at 10 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Trade Union House in Sarajevo.

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are demanding that BiH adopt a new labour law. Foreign experts claim that BiH's current labour laws do not allow for the employment of new workers. Workers in BiH have been divided into “insiders” and “outsiders”. “Insiders” are those who are currently employed and have secure jobs and do not allow "outsiders" to enter their positions.

Representatives of trade unions in BiH, however, claim otherwise. They accuse the World Bank and the IMF of wanting to make jobs in BiH unstable. Practically, they warn, if the new labour law were adopted, it would practically mean that no job in BiH is secure, and people would not dare to take out housing loans.

In BiH, unionists state, the obstacle to jobs is not the existing labour laws, but corruption and nepotism, writes Patria.
