Bećirović: Streets should be named after Bosnian kings, ZAVNOBiH councilors and Army soldiers

SDP representative in the BiH Parliament Denis Bećirović believes that streets, squares, public institutions, and institutions in the fields of education, science, culture, sports, and healthcare should be named, first and foremost, after:

1. Bosnian kings and bans from the era of medieval Bosnia;

2. councilors of ZAVNOBiH who restored the statehood of BiH in 1943;

3. soldiers of the Army of the Republic of BiH who defended the independence of BiH from 1992 to 1995.

- It is a grave stupidity to confront anti-fascists who restored the statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1941 to 1945 and anti-fascists who preserved the independence of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995.

The danger for the future of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina is incalculable if we confront Statehood Day (November 25, 1943) and Independence Day (March 1, 1992). Only ignoramuses or those who do not wish the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina well can do that.

Instead of a frivolous approach, we need a professional, reasoned, and intelligent approach to strengthening and affirming state-building awareness among all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is not a job for ignorant, embittered, and immature individuals; it should be devised by those who know how to affirm the cultural, political, historical, and state-legal continuity of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Of course, besides these periods, there are other eras in our history in which great, meritorious, and wise people acted, who also deserve to be honored and thanked. However, in these times of constant attacks on the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is extremely important to place emphasis on those periods and personalities who built, restored, and preserved our homeland Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A wise government knows that history does not begin with it. A prudent government does not provoke futile debates about street names and does not unnecessarily divide the citizens of our state. On the contrary, instead of shoddy inter-party squabbling, a well-conceived and long-term state policy should encourage scientific, state, and civil institutions, associations, societies, and organizations to study and affirm in the 21st century, in a studious and serious manner, medieval Bosnian statehood, the anti-fascist struggle and the merits of ZAVNOBiH councilors for the restoration of the statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the immense merits of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in defending and preserving the independent and internationally recognized state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We must overcome our forgetfulness and establish a spiritual and intellectual connection between Bosnia's present and our best ancestors who for centuries built, developed, preserved, and defended our homeland.

For the policy of preserving and developing the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, tendentious and thoughtless initiatives about street names that quarrel and divide the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina are not useful. We must, finally, open our eyes and think about how to more effectively and intelligently oppose the great-state and separatist attacks on the statehood, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Instead of false dilemmas, constant quarrels among BiH citizens, and subjective affinities of individuals, it is necessary to have:

1. well-conceived strategic goals;

2. a smart educational policy;

3. organized motivation of new generations of BiH intelligentsia towards scientific research of the issue of state-legal continuity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Finally, we must never forget that at the foundations of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina lies the idea of freedom, anti-fascism, and equality of all its citizens. Because of this, among other things, Bosnia and Herzegovina has a future - concluded Denis Bećirović.
