Bećirović at the UN: I will continue the diplomatic fight for justice and truth

(Patria) - Chairman of the BiH Presidency Denis Bećirović spoke with numerous ambassadors of UN member states at the headquarters of that international organization in New York as part of activities aimed at spreading the truth about the genocide committed against Bosniaks in and around Srebrenica.

The Ambassador of BiH to the UN, Zlatko Lagumdžija, and Head of Cabinet, Alija Kožljak, also attended the meetings at the UN headquarters in New York.

In a separate meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of Angola, Francisco José da Cruz, Bećirović emphasized that the adoption of the resolution on July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica committed in 1995 holds great significance for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the region, and the entire world.

He stressed the importance of UN member states recognizing that the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica serves as a reminder of the international community's responsibility to prevent the commission of genocide in the future.

It is important for every country that has officially accepted the principles on which the international community functions to participate in spreading the truth.

Bećirović concluded that the UN has an obligation, by adopting the resolution, to at least partially rectify the historical injustice towards the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.

Bećirović also spoke with the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Joonkook Hwang, at the UN headquarters. During the conversation, he stated that the UN resolution on the Srebrenica genocide is necessary for preserving peace and strengthening trust, as well as the culture of remembrance.

He said that the resolution on Srebrenica does not threaten the interests of any nation, but exclusively addresses the genocide that has been legally proven before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

During the conversation with the Ambassador of the Republic of Cabo Verde, Tania Serafim Yvonne Romualdo, Bećirović pointed out the importance of adopting the resolution on Srebrenica.

He emphasized that the UN has a fundamental obligation to promote peace, and that lasting peace can be achieved by promoting truth and preventing any attempt to commit genocide, anywhere in the world.

He recalled that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) determined in their judgments that genocide was committed in Srebrenica and that no one can question this.

He stressed that the proposed resolution is not a threat to any nation and does not contain any sentence about collective responsibility.
