Bećirović in Vienna: Through a Culture of Remembrance We Fight for a Democratic Europe

Member of the BiH Presidency Denis Bećirović attended the unveiling ceremony of the monument "Flower of Srebrenica" at the United Nations (UN) Square in Vienna, directly in front of the UN building. The ceremony was also attended by the Chairwoman of the BiH Presidency Željko Komšić, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Austria Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Elmedin Konaković, and numerous other representatives of Austrian and BiH institutions, the diplomatic corps, religious communities, and members of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian diaspora.

"The genocide against Bosniaks was committed in and around Srebrenica, in the UN safe zone. That is why the facts that we are opening this monument at the UN Square and on UN Day carry additional symbolism. From Vienna, we send a global message that the victims of genocide are not forgotten and that deniers of the truth will not succeed," Bećirović emphasized, speaking about the symbolism of the place and date.

Addressing those present, the member of the BiH Presidency thanked the Republic of Austria for its support during the adoption of the Resolution on the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly in May 2024.

He stressed that Bosnia and Herzegovina greatly appreciates the fact that the friendly Republic of Austria was one of the co-sponsors of the Resolution on Srebrenica.

Bećirović also highlighted the important role of the Alliance of BiH Associations Consilium Bosniacum, which contributed to the realization of this project, noting that the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community in the Republic of Austria forms a strong link between the two countries.

"Through a culture of remembrance, we fight for a democratic Europe. Thank you to the friendly Republic of Austria for preserving the truth about the genocide committed against Bosniaks. Long live the friendship between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Austria," stated, among other things, the member of the BiH Presidency Denis Bećirović.
