Bećirović-Shaheen: Bosnia and Herzegovina's place is in Euro-Atlantic structures

(Patria) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Denis Bećirović spoke with Senator and Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Jeanne Shaheen within the framework of the Munich Security Conference.

Bećirović thanked for the continuous support of the United States of America for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also pointed out the importance of the proposed Law on Democracy and Prosperity in the Western Balkans, which Senator Shaheen submitted with Senator Roger Wicker. Bećirović emphasized that this represents concrete support for the BiH economy, reforms, and sanctions for corruption.

They assessed the importance of the European Council making a decision to start EU accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina at its upcoming meeting. Bećirović stressed that this would be a concrete incentive for implementing reform processes essential for the continued democratization of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The interlocutors stated that Russian influence represents a threat to the security and stability of the Western Balkans, especially Bosnia and Herzegovina as a country aspiring to NATO membership. Senator Shaheen announced that she will continue to strongly advocate for additional US engagement in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in the Western Balkans.

US Senator Shaheen is considered one of the best connoisseurs of the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and as Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, she focuses on Bosnia and Herzegovina, which she often visits. Last October, she also visited the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center, according to a statement from the Cabinet of the BiH Presidency Member Denis Bećirović.
