Bećirović supported the Peace Summit communique on Ukraine, Cvijanović asked for it to be 'neutral' and not to join the statement

(Patria) - Chairman of the BiH Presidency Denis Bećirović joined the communique of the Peace Summit on Ukraine held in Burgenstock, Switzerland.

The communique was supported by 80 out of 91 participating countries. Bosnia and Herzegovina is also listed among the countries that joined the communique on the official website of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Armenia, Brazil, the Holy See, India, Indonesia, Colombia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, and South Africa did not support the document.

BiH Presidency member Željka Cvijanović attempted to prevent BiH from joining this communique, sending a letter to Denis Bećirović on June 14th through the Secretary General of the BiH Presidency, Zoran Đerić.

"I am addressing you regarding the proposed amendments to the draft final communique of the upcoming Peace Summit on Ukraine in Burgenstock, which the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland submitted for consideration on 06/13/2024.

Regarding the text of the aforementioned communique, I remind you that it was not discussed at the sessions of the BiH Presidency, nor was it subject to a decision by the Cabinets of the BiH Presidency members. In accordance with the above, since there is no established position, BiH should be neutral on this issue, meaning it should not join the final communique," Cvijanović stated.

However, Bećirović acted in accordance with civilizational values and joined the communique. In his address, he expressed support for Ukraine, emphasizing that it is a defense of international law and the fundamental principles on which the civilized world is based.

"The state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a victim of brutal aggression from 1992 to 1995, fully understands the suffering and plight of the citizens of Ukraine. Unfortunately, Europe is once again facing the policy of territorial expansionism.

The ultimate goal of the wars of aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine is the same – territorial expansion. That is why one of the messages from my country was: 'Learn from Sarajevo – save Kyiv'! I believe that a just and lasting peace in Ukraine has no alternative," Bećirović said during his address at the Summit.

The communique confirms support for Ukraine's territorial integrity, states that the threat or use of nuclear weapons in the context of the ongoing war against Ukraine is inadmissible, that food supplies must not be jeopardized, and that all prisoners of war must be released.
