(Patria) - After numerous meetings yesterday in New York, the Chairperson of the BiH Presidency Denis Bećirović began today's meetings with a conversation with the Ambassador of Ecuador José De La Gasca.
During the meeting, they discussed the importance of adopting the resolution on July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica committed in 1995.
Bećirović emphasized that the adoption of the resolution in the UN General Assembly is an obligation to the victims of genocide, but also to future generations around the world.
The adoption of the resolution would show commitment to justice and truth, and at the same time, it would pay tribute to the families of the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, who are daily exposed to insults from genocide deniers.
Ambassador De La Gasca clearly expressed his position that what happened in Srebrenica was not an incident but genocide. This has been confirmed by two UN courts, and those who respect international law must have a clear stance on the genocide committed in Srebrenica.
Bećirović stated that the resolution is based on international and national law, and that final judgments of the highest UN courts have confirmed that genocide was committed against Bosniaks in the UN safe zone of Srebrenica.
During the conversation, the global importance of genocide prevention and the significance of studying genocide in the education of children and youth were highlighted.
Bećirović pointed out that an educational system that integrates the truth about the genocide in Srebrenica will contribute to preserving peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region in the long term, and will contribute to the process of reconciliation.
The Ambassador of BiH to the UN, Zlatko Lagumdžija, also attended the meetings at the UN headquarters in New York.
