Bećirović: The truth about genocide must be preserved and defended

(Patria) - Today we gather in Potočari to mark 30 years since the genocide against Bosniaks in and around Srebrenica – one of the darkest chapters of European history. With sadness, we bid farewell to seven new victims to their eternal rest and express our deep sympathy to the families, said Denis Bećirović, addressing the commemoration ceremony.

"The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring July 11th as the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide. This day represents our obligation to not forget and to fight for justice.

The genocide was not an accidental act, but a planned crime with the clear support of the leadership of Serbia and Slobodan Milošević. Belgrade knew about these crimes and provided them with logistical and military support.

Today, more than ever, we must oppose any denial of the truth and dangerous propaganda that again threatens Bosnia and Herzegovina. Only truth and justice can prevent the recurrence of such tragedies.

I call on the leadership of Serbia to accept the rulings of international courts and build relations based on equality and respect. Peace and security depend on the common will and readiness to acknowledge the past and learn from it.

Despite all the suffering, we have not surrendered and will not surrender. Justice and peace are not secure if we do not defend them.

Thirty years after the committed genocide, let us face and reflect long-term on several serious and warning facts.

First, the ideology and policies that led to the genocide still threaten and must not be underestimated. Second, Bosniaks as a people have not eliminated the danger of a new genocide. And the third fact, the crime of genocide can only be stopped by a strong state and people ready to defend it. Despite the committed genocide and aggression, we have not surrendered, we have not faltered, and we never will.

Peace is not secure if we do not defend it. Truth is not indestructible if we do not remember and preserve it. There is no justice if we do not fight for it.

Finally, once again, I extend words of respect, sympathy, and solidarity to the families of the genocide victims.

In conclusion, I express my deep respect and solidarity to the families of the victims and the brave Mothers of Srebrenica who teach us how to preserve and pass on the truth to future generations," said Bećirović.
