Bećirović and Komšić at the UN: Protect the truth about the Srebrenica genocide

(Patria) - Chairman and member of the BiH Presidency Denis Bećirović and Željko Komšić spoke with the President of the UN General Assembly Dennis Francis at UN headquarters on the occasion of the presentation of the Draft Resolution on the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica committed in 1995.

Bećirović and Komšić emphasized the importance of the UN General Assembly as one of the main bodies where all UN member states are represented.

They expressed special gratitude for the continuous commitment of representatives of member states in the UN General Assembly to improving international cooperation in the economic, social, political, cultural, educational, and healthcare fields, and to assisting in the realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the conversation with Francis, the significance of the final verdicts of the highest UN courts (International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia), which confirmed that genocide was committed against Bosniaks in the UN safe zone of Srebrenica, was re-emphasized.

These are court verdicts that cannot be erased from human history.

By institutionally protecting the legacy of UN tribunals and courts, democratic values and the fundamental principles on which the UN is based are simultaneously protected, and it also contributes to ensuring that such crimes are never repeated, Bećirović and Komšić emphasized.

They stressed that the adoption of the resolution should encourage UN member states to, among other things, adopt teaching and educational programs based on which future generations will be educated about the prevention and consequences of genocide.

For the future work of the UN and the preservation of the credibility of this most important international organization, it is extremely important to learn lessons from the UN's failure to prevent the genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica, as presented in the report of the Secretary-General regarding UN General Assembly Resolution 53/35 The Fall of Srebrenica (A/54/549).

Furthermore, Bećirović and Komšić stated that by adopting the Resolution on July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica committed in 1995, the UN will highlight the importance of promoting the truth about the committed genocide.

The Resolution is not only about the past but also about the importance of building a safer future for new generations, and it will contribute to building an open society based on democratic and civic values, Bećirović and Komšić emphasized during their conversation with the President of the UN General Assembly Dennis Francis at UN headquarters in New York.
