Bakalar clear: No constitutional or legal obstacles for the 2022 General Elections

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Željko Bakalar, president of the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CIK BiH), spoke tonight on Twitter, where in his post he emphasized that there are no constitutional or legal obstacles for organizing general elections and implementing election results after the 2022 elections. This statement comes after claims by the president of HDZ BiH, Dragan Čović, who after the fiasco in Neum told HRT that "there are no conditions for holding elections because certain provisions of the Election Law have been put out of force."

"There are no constitutional or legal obstacles for organizing general elections and implementing election results after the 2022 elections. The current legal situation cannot be compared with the impossibility of conducting elections in Mostar. Constitutional and legal discrimination remains, and that is an obstacle to BiH's European path!" wrote Bakalar in his tweet.

He also cited articles of the Election Law of BiH that clearly define dates for conducting elections and the obligation to secure financial resources.

He also published a CIK document stating that strengthening the integrity of the electoral process is a dominant proposal of CIK BiH and the result of six months of work by members of the institution outside the Inter-agency Working Group.

We recall, at the meetings in Neum, Čović emphasized that the CIK is illegal and demanded that in the future it be elected by the House of Peoples of the BiH Parliament instead of the House of Representatives. However, for representatives of the international community and the OSCE, CIK BiH is the only competent institution for conducting elections and has the mandate to do so.
