Avdo in Srebrenica decided to seize a business opportunity and offer it to others

(Patria) - More and more young people are leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina in search of jobs and better living conditions. Even when they leave only for seasonal work, in construction or hospitality, they hope to find better solutions. However, there are also those who decide to start their own business in their hometown, or continue a family tradition, thus providing a business opportunity for others as well.

The guesthouse "Misirlije" in Srebrenica was for many years the first choice for most people looking for accommodation and good food in this town. After a three-year break, Avdo Purković, the son of the famous professor of the former Srebrenica hospitality school, decides to continue the family tradition.

"We work with a lot of love and it brings results. And then guests come, they see that we give something more of ourselves and that it is worth traveling all that way. When I started doing this job, since my father was a professor of cooking, he first told me: You cannot do this job if you don't know it yourself. I finished management and marketing, but I had to take a step back and I had to finish hospitality school. Everything that is done in the kitchen and related to hospitality - I had to learn," says Avdo.

The guesthouse employs six people, and for some of them this is their first work experience.

"I work here for the first time, actually, for the first time anywhere. I started a month ago, a friend told me they were looking for a worker, I came and got the job immediately. We have domestic and foreign guests, foreigners prefer home cooking and food. I most often make 'tava', which is the house specialty. We have an older cook so we learned to make that too, that's what we do the most," points out kitchen worker Melisa Bektić.

"Today, in small communities like Srebrenica, it is difficult to start a business. The Tourist Organization of Srebrenica supports any form of such initiative, people who decide to start their own business, especially in hospitality and tourism. We have several positive examples and as a Tourist Organization we try to present them as well as possible at fairs. Also, all tourists who come to us and look for food and accommodation - we recommend those facilities," says Slaviša Petrović, director of the Tourist Organization of the Municipality of Srebrenica.

In Srebrenica, many have tried to engage in hospitality and other businesses, most often unsuccessfully. Our interlocutor Avdo Purković says the recipe is persistence, but also good food and service that make guests return:

"We have foreign guests coming and we want to offer something of local character and we want to use ingredients and products, everything we can find that is locally produced."
