Myanmar's Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi has cancelled her appearance at the regular annual session of the UN General Assembly ahead of the Security Council session, her spokesperson confirmed, reports Patria agency.
The UN recently confirmed that members of the Muslim minority in Myanmar, the Rohingya, are victims of ethnic cleansing by the Myanmar army.
The former dissident and Nobel Peace Prize laureate is under heavy criticism from the international community for her silence on the fate of this Muslim minority, which is fleeing Myanmar en masse.
According to data from a UN commission, 379,000 Rohingya Muslims had fled Myanmar to Bangladesh by the end of August.
Aung San Suu Kyi has stated several times that she will support the rights of the Muslim minority in Myanmar, but during the recent events, she publicly supported the Myanmar army in what she called a fight against terrorism.
The BBC published a video recording a few days ago in which the Myanmar leader claims that ethnic cleansing is not being carried out in that country.
