Appeal to Sarajevo Citizens: Use Water Rationally to Avoid Reductions

(Patria) - Due to extremely high temperatures and increased water consumption, Sarajevo is experiencing a difficult hydrological situation.

The Ministry of Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of Sarajevo Canton has also issued an appeal for the rational use of water.

"Although the Ministry does not have prescribed direct executive responsibilities in such situations, when there are periods of increased air temperatures and a possible reduction in water supply intensity, we remind everyone of the obligation to comply with all legal and other acts intended for all participants, so that the period of reduced yield from all water sources in KS passes with as few consequences as possible.

We remind you of the valid legal and sub-legal provisions that prescribe detailed regulation of the performance of certain communal activities, regulation of conditions for drinking water supply, for the treatment and disposal of wastewater and rainwater, but we also remind you of the necessary and rational use of drinking water, especially during possible water shortages or other emergencies.

We must be responsible towards those who may suffer the greatest consequences in the event of an undesirable situation, especially towards those who are settled in parts of Sarajevo Canton where numerous renovation works are being carried out or where the water inflow is currently reduced," the Ministry states.

They emphasize that the current state of the overall water supply system is not alarming.

"The Ministry of Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of Sarajevo Canton has prepared guidelines for a possible Operational Plan with necessary measures framed in specific phases that will be considered by the Government of Sarajevo Canton in order to implement more efficient water management.

Also, the Ministry informs citizens that, within the proposed measures and guidelines, potential temporary bans and guidelines for reducing certain public activities that contribute to increased water consumption have been included.

At this moment and in these phases of action, our goal is to encourage users to use resources responsibly as much as possible in order to avoid possible reductions in water supply to the greatest extent possible.

We encourage entities in the system to necessarily increase the identification and repair of faults in the water supply system to reduce losses, and to more promptly and intensively monitor the condition of water sources, the amount of available water, as well as the dynamics of fault repair.

In addition to daily regular coordination, we encourage all communal enterprises that are implementing their plans of activities and measures in accordance with the situation on the ground, to urgently prepare new plans adapted to the newly created situation," the Ministry states.
