Anti-fascists mark 76 years since the liberation of Mostar from fascism

MOSTAR, (Patria) - This date is one of the most important in the city's history, because the citizens of Mostar truly welcomed freedom on February 14, said the president of UABNOR BiH Sead Đulić on the occasion of the Days of Anti-fascism in Mostar, which marks 76 years since the liberation of Mostar from fascism in World War II, February 14, 1945 - February 14, 2021. Members of associations that cherish the legacy of anti-fascism from all over BiH came to Mostar today.

''On that day, the turbulent and energetic development of a small urban center into a modern city in every respect began, which later became the center of Herzegovina and a place people came to live in, unlike today's Mostar from which people flee,'' he said.

He also commented on the fact that the City Administration has not officially marked this day since 2005.

''I am an incorrigible optimist and I believe that some things will change, because they must. The current government obstructs this with claims about the murders of seven Franciscan priests, thus holding the entire city as its hostage. All of us who follow these currents talk about this seriously and again call for judicial action, because war crimes do not become statute-barred. This can be resolved, but no one acts, and by this inaction the city is kept in the status of a hostage,'' Đulić said.

The organizer of the anniversary is UABNOR Mostar, and the event began with a visit to the memorial plaque to fallen soldiers in Blagaj. After that, the participants visited numerous locations in the city where memorial plaques and busts of prominent figures from that time are placed, such as Zlatka Vuković, national heroes Dr. Safet Mujić, Mladen Balorda, Mustafa Ćemalović Ćimba, and monuments to illegal fighters near the Health Center.

At the National Theater of Mostar, the exhibition ''Mostar in the Fight for Freedom'' was opened, as well as the ceremonial program ''Dream of Freedom'' during which awards were presented. At the end of the ceremony, participants visited the Partisan Memorial Cemetery where they paid tribute and laid flowers and wreaths.
