US Congressman Mike Turner warned officials of Bosnia and Herzegovina that Washington could suspend aid to the country if official Sarajevo does not abandon the dispute with Montenegro over Sutorina, Montenegrin media reported today about the area that both countries consider theirs, the Patria news agency reports.
The daily Vijesti reports that Turner, in a letter to the Bosniak member of the BiH Presidency Bakir Izetbegović, pointed out that the Congress and Senate will decide on a document calling on BiH authorities to respect previously established borders and confirm the border demarcation agreement with Montenegro.
According to diplomatic sources cited by the newspaper, Turner also submitted to Izetbegović this document titled the Montenegro Border Integrity Act, the paper writes.
The Sutorina issue is “an attempt to create a territorial dispute to halt integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions, such as NATO,” Turner warned, the Montenegrin paper writes.
Congressman Turner is the chair of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and an advocate for Montenegro's entry into NATO.
Montenegrin politicians claim that under the Dayton Agreement and the opinion of the Badinter Commission, Sutorina is the territory of Montenegro. Bosnian experts dispute this opinion.
