An American military aircraft crashed on Tuesday morning in southern Germany, but the pilot managed to eject and sustained only minor injuries, local police reported, according to the Patria news agency.
"Around 9:30 a.m., information indicated the crash of a military aircraft south of the Bayreuth area," a police spokesperson said, emphasizing that it was an American F-16, according to data available to the authorities.
"The pilot managed to save himself thanks to an ejection seat. He is slightly injured," he added.
The location where the aircraft crashed is a wooded area, and firefighters were dispatched to extinguish a fire caused by the accident.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, and German news station N24 mentioned an engine failure. The aircraft took off from the American base in Spangdahlem, in western Germany, Index reports.
